    Expandable graphite, aka flexible graphite, is made by high-temperature transient processing of our high-quality natural flake graphite. After the processing, its shape changes to wormlike from flake while its volume could be 100~450 times larger. Expandable graphite, aka flexible graphite, is made by high-temperature transient processing of our high-quality natural flake graphite. After the processing, its shape changes to wormlike from flake while its volume could be 100~450 times larger. Graphite crystal has hexagonal net plane layered structure consisting of carbon. Carbon atoms on the layer are bonded by strong covalent bond while layers are bonded by weak VDW with a larger  distance.Therefore, under the right conditions, multiple chemicals such as acid metal, alkali metal and salt chemicals could insert graphite layers and combine with carbon atoms to form GIC (Graphite Intercalation on Compounds). Heated to appropriate temperature, GIC would decompose instantly and produce a lot of gas, which makes graphite expand along the axis direction and form new wormlike substance, that is expandable graphite.

Graphite after the expansion are called expandable graphite or graphite worms, changing from flake to low-density wormlike and forming an excellent thermal insulation blanket. Expandable graphite is not only the carbon source in the expansion system, but also an effective heat insulating layer which has the characteristics of low heat release rate, small mass loss and less smoke in the fire. Expandable graphite is loose and porous, consequently it is an excellent absorbent for its strong absorption capacity to organic compounds. For instance, 1 g expandable graphite could absorb 80 g petroleum. Therefore expandable graphite is designed as absorbent to many kinds of industrial grease and oil.

    Expanded graphite can easily absorb oil, organic molecules and hydrophobic substances, and it has irreplaceable effects for water environmental treatment. When it is used in granular form for surface oil removal, the dosage is 1~lo% /rn and absorption time is from 15 rain to few hours according to the oil type and area on water surface.

According to its application, there are mainly two categories of flexible graphite sealing material: stuffing box packing for all kinds of pump, valve and reaction kettle; graphite sheets for all kinds of pipe flange.

1. stuffing box packing

stuffing box packing is the preformed filler formed directly on the pressure machine by cutting expandable graphite strip into appropriate width and length and wound them in the metal mould of different specifications, which is applied into multiple globe valve, gate valve, regulating valve, ball valve, plus valve and etc.

2. gasket seal

There are mainly two types. one is pure graphite sheet which is directly formed by compression in the metal mold with expanded graphite granule pressing molding, or formed directly by cutting expanded graphite sheet. The other type is graphite wound gasket,  formed by overlapping the metal strip with expanded graphite, which could by used under relatively high pressure.

3. graphite wire rod

Graphite packing is a sealing material made of cotton fiber or graphite fiber woven with graphite foil. Graphite packing with cotton fiber as its core (SPM) is applicable to sealing of pipe, valve, pump seal under 12 MPa and below 200℃, and the contact media may be river water, tap water, groundwater, sea water, oil, and etc. Graphite packing with graphite fiber as its core (SPS) is applicable under 12 MPa and below 350 ℃,and the contact media could also be acid and alkali substances in the exception of water, oil and so on.
